While by no means a strict Irish reel, "Big Ben's Reel" is a delightfully energetic romp of a saxophone quartet.
In fact, it's a bit of a multi-cultural Irish stew, with references to Balkan music (alto) and American funk (tenor). Those of you familiar with my earlier work Cityscapes will appreciate the nod to Jewish music (baritone) as well.
"Big Ben" was commissioned by Ben Drouet, a wonderful English saxophone teacher. He had me write this piece for the Sax Pistols, a fantastic high-school aged saxophone quartet he coaches.
